Abstract

Youth entrepreneurship being the “practical application of enterprising qualities, such as initiative, innovation, creativity, and risk-taking (by youth) into the work environment” is a development strategy for most economies. However, most youths suffer the realities of unemployment in Nigeria and particularly, Plateau State. This study was aimed at evaluating the influence of religious orientation and family background on the creation of intrinsic drives in youths for entrepreneurship. The choice of only religion and family background as cultural determinants of youth
entrepreneurship was informed by the persuasive influence that family ties and religion exert on Nigerian communities in general, and Plateau State in particular. Data for the analyses were collected from Primary sources (Questionnaires) only. The Krejcie, & Morgan, (1970) table for sample size determination was used to arrive at the sample size of 123 from a total population of 184. The population is made up of young entrepreneurs in Plateau State. Logistic regression modelling technique was used to analyze data collected. The study found that family orientation had 1.374 chances of prompting youth entrepreneurship while religious orientation is 3.130
times likely to prompt youth entrepreneurship. The study concluded that youth entrepreneurship is not significantly influenced by family background, but on the other hand, religious orientation significantly influences youth entrepreneurship. The study recommends that the government should take interest in churches and mosques (without negating the principle of separation of church and State) as therein lies
enormous potentials for the development of youth entrepreneurship.
